There are many things that you can do when running a daycare center. You can easily adjust your daycare center to fit your lifestyle. If you have a lot of free space around your home, why not convert it into a daycare center? It’s easy to find guides on what to do as a new daycare owner. But what about the things you shouldn't do? Most people will be afraid to tell you what NOT to do, but this knowledge is as important as knowing what to do. As a new business owner, you might be wondering what NOT to do when running a daycare center. Where can you go wrong? Here are a few helpful tips and hints that you can use as a guide.

It would be a dumb idea to:

1.       NOT get your licenses and insurance papers. Why? Most parents will not leave their children in the care of an unlicensed daycare center. You will lose lots of money right there. Spending a little for registering and acquiring licenses is better than losing potential customers when they ask for your licensing. Having no insurance is also a bad idea. What if something happens to your business? Then you have no way to recuperate or rebuild after the loss. Payments may be a hassle, but the protection that you get from insurance is not. There are also several types of insurance packages for daycare centers that help protect you from possible legal ramifications.

2.       NOT childproof your business area or ensure the safety of your charges. If you did get your insurance packages and licenses, you know that there are certain safety conditions to fulfill. Becoming negligent in this area can lead to a big fat lawsuit, especially if a child gets injured.

3.       NOT run background checks on your employees. You will be handling other people’s children. Running background checks for criminal records is a must, especially if you’re hiring people you don’t know. This is a must for all employees that come in contact for the children and even for those that don’t, like landscapers. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

4.       NOT have a first-aid kit. We don’t expect you to be outfitted like the nearest hospital but a good first aid kit is usually a great thing to have around. Children are prone to scrapes and scratches and little accidents and it would do you good to have a first aid kit on hand.

5.       NOT be clean. A clean daycare is a sight that parents love to see.  A potential client can easily be turned off by unsightly messes in the children’s area. Keeping things clean and sanitary is one way to win them over.

These are the basic things that you should NOT do when running a daycare. Everything above will benefit you and your business, as well as your customers in the long run. A little planning goes a long way towards keeping your business protected and turning it into a success.
