3 Nature and Science Activities for Preschoolers

by Carla on October 12, 2012

Science activities allow preschoolers to satisfy their inherent curiosity. Preschoolers are captivated by living things and how substances react together. Provide memorable science activities that help captivate preschoolers as they learn about science. Daycare providers can provide hands-on science experiences and experiments and be sure to supervise all activities very closely.

Science Objectives
Ask questions and seek answers with some assistance from adults
Illustrate observations through multimedia
Discuss and recognize weather
Understand and explore senses
Discuss changes in seasons and how it affects plants, animals and people
Compare textures of items
Observe individualized differences of living things

Science Activities
Mini Greenhouse Herb Garden
Materials
: 2 liter soda bottle, utility knife, potting soil, herb seeds, water, plate
Discussion Starters: Discuss the elements plants need to grow. Bring in a variety of herbs and let the children smell them. What are herbs? Have you ever tasted herbs? Today we are going to plant herbs in a small green house.
Instructions: Ask each child to bring in a 2 liter plastic soda bottle.  Remove the label and cut the bottle in half lengthwise so that the bottom half is large enough to hold soil. Create small holes in this half for drainage. Allow children to add potting soil and plant seeds to create an herb garden. Place the lid on the greenhouse. Put the greenhouse on a plate and in a sunny spot. Instruct the children to water once or twice per week as necessary.

Mixing Colors
Materials: Paper plates, red paint, blue paint, yellow paint, paint stir sticks
Discussion Starters: We are going to use paint to explore how colors mix to create new colors. Can you mix the blue paint with the red paint? What color does it make?
Instructions: Give each child a small amount of red and blue paint. Encourage the students to mix the colors on a paper plate and observe the results. Next, repeat with red and yellow paint and then blue and yellow paint. Together, create one chart to show the results.

Pressed Flowers and Leaves Nature Book
Materials: Leaves, flowers, large heavy book, construction paper, tissue paper, glue, 3 ring binder, sheet protectors.
Discussion Starters:  Let’s take a nature walk. What are your favorite flowers? Leaves change colors. What colors can leaves be? What will happen when the leaves dry?
Instructions: Take children on a nature walk to collect flowers and leaves. Help children press leaves and flowers between two pieces of tissue paper. If you decide to put several leaves and flowers together on the same piece of tissue paper, do not let the flowers and leaves touch. Put the tissue paper between the pages of a heavy book (like a telephone book) and do not disturb for at least one week but not longer than ten days. Next, take the tissue paper out of the book to reveal the dried flowers. Children can then glue the dried flowers and leave on construction paper. Write the name of the plants beneath each one. Put the pages into sheet protectors and these sheet protectors into a 3 ring binder.
