Enjoy this simple 4th of July preschool lesson plan. The activities below will introduce children to Independence Day through fun facts, activities, books, songs, and crafts. This lesson plan works well in conjunction with a daycare center unit with a theme about patriotism or Flag Day.

Learning about Independence Day

Basic facts about the 4th of July:

4th of July, is also called Independence Day, and is celebrated on July 4.
4th of July is an American holiday commemorating the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The holiday also celebrates America’s independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

4th of July Craft

4th of July Fireworks Art
Materials: Black construction paper, silver glitter, q-tips, glue
Instructions: Encourage the children the dip their q-tips in glue and dot it all over the construction paper. Show children how to sprinkle glitter over the entire paper and then shake off any excess glitter to reveal a stunning fireworks print.

Independence Day Snack
Red White and Blue Fruit Salad

Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk ¼ cup lime juice, 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint and ¼ cup honey. Add 3 cups of fresh blueberries, 1 quart of strawberries, halved, and 3 medium apples peeled and cut in 1 inch chunks to the bowl. Toss until well combined. Let the fruit salad sit for 15 min, then serve. Serves 8 but can be doubled for a larger group.
