4th of July Preschool Lesson Plan

Enjoy this simple 4th of July preschool lesson plan. The activities below will introduce children to Independence Day through fun facts, activities, books, songs, and crafts. This lesson plan works well in conjunction with a daycare center unit with a theme about patriotism or Flag Day.

Learning about Independence Day

Basic facts about the 4th of July:

  • 4th of July, is also called Independence Day, and is celebrated on July 4.
  • 4th of July is an American holiday commemorating the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
  • The holiday also celebrates America’s independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

4th of July Craft
Patriotic Plant Pot

Provide children with white, blue and red paint, paint brushes, and a small flower pot. Instruct children to paint the rim of the flowerpot white. Then show them how to paint the lower part of the pot blue. Allow the paint to dry.  Apply a second coat to the white part of the flower pot and allow it to dry. Help children make white stars on the blue portion of the flower pot. Then show them how to paint red stripes on the white part. Allow to dry completely.

Independence Day Cooking and Snack Activities

Flag Snack
Ingredients: graham crackers, pretzel sticks, White Frosting, and star-shaped cereal

Instructions: Children can spread frosting on a graham cracker Have each child spread frosting on the graham cracker square. Then show preschoolers how to create the flag’s stripes using pretzel sticks. Then children can add stars in the corner of their flag snack.

Red, White, and Blue Kabobs
Help children make a patriotic, healthy, and delicious snack

Ingredients:
Strawberries, Banana, Blueberries, and wooden skewers
Clean, trim and slice the strawberries, banana and blueberries. Children can place a blueberry, strawberry, and a piece of banana on each toothpick and then repeat the pattern.
4th of July Songs

Teach the children this Independence Day song * sung to the tune of: “3 Blind Mice”

“Red, white, blue
Red, white, blue
Stars and stripes too
Stars and stripes too
We celebrate Independence Day
Each July 4th, the American Way
With red, white, blue”.

Teach the children the song “Fourth Day of July” by Jean Warren to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.

Today is special, do you know why?
It’s the 4th day of July.
See the flags passing by.
See the fireworks in the sky.
It’s a special celebration.
It’s the birthday of our nation.
