Present this simple October lesson plan that is all about frogs. Children will learn about fall and October through a fun fall craft, a fall physical activity, a fall poem and song and preschool picture books about frogs. This lesson plan also goes well with a theme about seasons and nature.
Autumn Craft
Crushed Fall Leaves Art
Materials: Fall leaves, construction paper, glue, water, paint brush
Instructions: Go on a nature walk with children and collect fall leaves. Make sure they are dried and crunchy. If not, dry them out in the sun. Provide each child with a piece of construction paper in the shape of a fall leaf. Dilute glue with water. Encourage the children to brush glue on the entire surface of the leaf and then sprinkle crushed leaves on the glue. Shake to remove excess and allow to dry completely.
Autumn Gross Motor (Physical) Activity
This gross motor activity involves jumping and hopping which are gross motor skills. Find and collect dried colorful fall leaves. Put the leaves in a kiddie pool. Invite the children over to the activity area. Explain that you are going to jump in the autumn leaves. Let the children take turns jumping in the leaves as well as raking and sweeping any leaves that fall out of the pool.
Fall Songs and Poems
Fall Poem*
Leaves are dropping from the trees
Yellow, brown, and red.
They patter softly like the rain-
One landed on my head.
Come out! Come out! The weather is clear.
Come out! Come out! October is here.
I’ll show you some presents from Jolly Jack Frost.
They are hidden in the leaves that the wind has tossed.
The brown nuts are falling and squirrels are at play.
They are finding all the good ones to hide them away.
Crimson leave and yellow.
Apple red and mellow.
Golden pumpkins on the ground.
Sights of autumn all around.
Falling, falling autumn leaves are falling.
Falling, falling, falling to the ground.
Whirling, whirling autumn leaves are whirling.
Whirling, whirling, whirling to the ground.
Down down yellow and brown
the leaves are falling all over the town.
Teach the children the song “Autumn Leaves” to the tune of “Mulberry Bush”
Summer leaves are hanging
Hanging, hanging
Summer leaves are hanging
All day long. (stand with arms outstretched)
Autumn leaves are turning colors…All day long. (turn around)
Autumn leaves are falling down…All day long. (lower self to floor)
Autumn leaves are dancing….All day long. (dance)
Autumn leave are being raked…..All day long. (a few children can gather the group closer)
