This simple preschool lesson plan is all about flower gardens. The activities below will introduce children to flower gardens and florists through a show and tell activity, a story circle, a music and movement activity, a science project and a dramatic play activity. For each activity you will find the materials, instructions and discussion starters (verbal cues). This lesson plan works well in conjunction with a daycare center unit with a spring or summer theme or a science theme.

3-D Flower Garden
Materials: Construction paper, markers, crayons, old seed catalogs, empty seed packets, Popsicle sticks, shoe box top (or other box top), butcher paper, glue, scissors
Discussion Starters: We will be making a flower garden. What kinds of things do we find in a flower garden? What kinds of flowers do you like? Let’s cut out pictures of flowers.
Instructions: Cover box tops in brown butcher paper to create a raised flower bed. Allow children to select and cut out pictures of flowers from seed catalogs and select empty seed packets. Glue the selected pictures or packets to the Popsicle sticks. Next let children stick their flowers in the flower bed to create a flower garden.
Science: Eggshell Garden
Egg Shell Garden
Materials: Eggs, egg cartons, soil, variety of seeds, Popsicle sticks, marker
Discussion Starters: Did you know you can grow plants in an egg shell carton? What types of plants would you like to grow? What helps seeds to grow?
Instructions: Crack eggs in half and clean out the shells. (Save and refrigerate egg yolks and egg whites for cooking). Add soil to each eggshell half and set them in egg shell cartons. Next, add seeds to each eggshell (one type of seed per eggshell). On each Popsicle stick, write the name of the plant and the name of the child who planted the seed. Place the eggshell cartons where it can receive proper sunlight. Water lightly and regularly. The children can observe their plants growing week by week.
