Art supplies for home daycare businesses can be expensive. However you can save some money by making simple craft materials and keep children safe because you know what’s going in them. These are the craft materials that children in your home daycare will use over and over again this summer in creative arts activities or free play. Here are some recipes for sidewalk chalk, bubbles, finger paint, colored sand, and aromatherapy Playdoh.
Liquid Sidewalk Chalk
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup cornstarch
Food coloring
Instructions:
Mix the water and cornstarch together until combined. Separate the mixture into cupcake tins. Then, add a few drops of food coloring to each tin. You can leave one white and then make basic red, yellow, and blue. You can also mix colors such as
Yellow + red = orange
Red + blue = purple
Blue + yellow = green
Use paint brushes, foam brushes, leaves or pinecones to paint on the sidewalk.
Homemade Bubbles
Ingredients:
1/4 cup natural dishwashing detergent (such as Seventh Generation)
3/4 cup water
5 or more drops of glycerin (can be found at your local health store)

Mix all ingredients together to a mason jar and shake gently. That’s it – bubbles are ready to be blown!

Aromatherapy Playdoh
Recipe for Homemade Playdoh:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1-1/2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Few drops of food coloring
1/4-teaspoon of essential oil of your choice
(Some aromatherapy ideas
- “Lime essential oil – mood uplifting and refreshing.
- Grapefruit essential oil – energizing and increases mental clarity and memory.
- Lavender essential oil – calming, relaxing and promotes restful sleep.”)
Instructions: Mix all the dry ingredients in a pan. Next mix the wet ingredients in a glass measuring cup
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture in the pan. Carefully stir until combined. Cook over medium heat for about 30 seconds to a minute. Mix in 1/4-teaspoon of essential oil and continue cooking, stirring constantly, about 30 seconds more. Once the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, it’s done. Shape the dough into a ball using your spoon and remove from the pan. Place the cooked dough on a sheet of wax paper and knead a few times until smooth. Store the dough in an airtight container so it won’t dry out.
