Enjoy this simple preschool lesson plan about the color purple. The activities below will introduce children to the color purple through fun facts, activities, books, songs, and a game. This lesson plan works well in conjunction with a daycare center unit theme about colors.

Purple Science Activity
In this simple science activity, children will pose the question “What happens when you mix the color blue and the color red together?”.
Materials: Red food coloring, blue food coloring, water, plastic water bottle (about 16 ounces)
Instructions: Add water to plastic water bottle. Next add drops of red and blue food coloring in equal amounts. Put the top back on the water  bottle and close the lid tight. Shake water bottle until  thoroughly mixed. Observe.

Purple Craft
Each student should bring in one purple item from home. As well, have some purple items on hand such as fabric scraps, yarn, buttons, tissue paper, cotton balls, confetti, glitter, wallpaper, wrapping paper. Have each child present their purple item and then glue the items to create a collage. Add purple embellishments of your choice.

Purple Music and Movement
Sing “We Love Purple” by heather McPhail to the tune of “Frere Jacques”
“We love purple, we love purple.
Yes, we do.  Yes, we do.
Purple grapes and eggplant,
Purple plums and grape juice,
Just for me, just for you”.

Purple Snack
Encourage each child to bring in purple snacks and have a purple snack party. Some food choices include: Grape jelly on crackers, mini jelly sandwiches, taro chips, cupcakes with purple frosting, eggplant, purple grapes (sliced), purple fruit leather, grape jello, grape juice, and plums.

Preschool Books about the Color Purple
Here are some great books about the color purple to share with children:
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes [Greenwillow Books, 1996]
Mr. Pine’s Purple House by Leonard Kessler [Purple House Press 2005]
Harold’s and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson [HarperCollins, 1958]
Purple: Seeing Purple All Around Us by Sarah L Schuette [Capstone Press, 2002]
