Enjoy this simple preschool lesson plan about the color yellow. The activities below will introduce children to the color yellow through a math activity, a craft, songs, and books. This lesson plan works well in conjunction with a daycare center unit theme about colors.

Yellow Preschool Math Activity
In this simple sorting activity, children will sort the ducks by size. Create duck shapes in two different sizes shades of yellow felt.  Divide a felt board in half and place one large duck on one side and one small duck on the other side. Next encourage the children to take turns sorting the ducks, placing them in the correct areas.

Yellow Collage Craft for Preschoolers
Each student should bring in one yellow item (or picture of a yellow item) from home. As well, have some yellow items on hand such as fabric scraps, yarn, buttons, tissue paper, cotton balls, confetti, glitter, wallpaper, or wrapping paper. Have each child present their yellow item and then glue the yellow items to create a collage. Add yellow embellishments of your choice.

Yellow Preschool Music and Movement
Teach the children the song “What is Yellow”*:

What is yellow?
A yellow shirt-
On my friend playing in the dirt.

What is yellow?
A yellow school bus –
Taking the children to school without a fuss.

What is yellow?
My big dog, Jones –
Digging in the yard for big old bones.

What is yellow?
A banana that’s sweet –
Take off the peel and it s ready to eat
.

Teach the Children the Song “Yellow Stars”* to the Tune “I’ve been working on the Railroad”

“Yellow Stars”

Yellow stars are shining brightly,
in the nighttime sky.
Yellow stars are shining brightly,
Just watch as they sail by.
You can make a wish upon them,
And it might come true.
Way up in the sky above us,
The stars shine for you.

Yellow Snacks

Encourage each child to bring in yellow snacks and have a fun yellow snack party. Some food choices include: Bananas, lemon or banana pudding, macaroni and cheese, yellow squash, pineapple, corn on the cob with butter, yellow jell-o, yellow cake, and deviled eggs.

Preschool Books about the Color Yellow
