More Homemade Art and Craft Supply Recipes for Daycare

Art supplies for home daycare businesses can be expensive. However you can save some money by making simple craft materials. These are the craft materials that children in your home daycare use over and over in creative arts activities or free play. Here are some recipes for play dough, face paint, silly putty, decoupage glue, crayons, finger paint, and bubbles.

Popsicle Paint
Materials
Liquid tempera paint
Ice cube trays
Craft sticks (or Popsicle sticks)
Instructions
Pour liquid tempera paint into ice cube trays. Put craft or Popsicle sticks in each compartment. It’s fine if they lean. Place trays in the freezer overnight. To loosen the paints, dip the bottom of the container in warm water.

Art Salts
Materials
Salt
Food coloring
Construction paper
White glue
Glass bowls
Instructions
In the glass bowls, add salt and then a few drops of food coloring, adding different colors to separate bowls. Suggestion: Squeeze white glue onto construction paper in patterns. Sprinkle colored sand on glue and shake off the excess.

Homemade Stickers
Materials
4 envelopes unflavored gelatin
2 cups water
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
Small saucepan
Paint brush
Instructions
combine the gelatin and water in a pan. Heat over medium heat to dissolve the gelatin then add in peppermint. Allow to cool. Use a small Paint brush to apply a thin layer on the back of any picture and let dry. To apply sticker, lick the sticker and then stick

Soap Crayons
Materials
7/8 cups of Ivory Snow (powdered detergent)
1/8 cups of water
Food coloring
Ice cube tray
Instructions
1.  Add the food coloring to the water to make VIVID colors
2.  Add the colored water to the Ivory Snow and mix well
3.  Press the mixture into the compartments of an ice cube tray
4.  Let the mixture set for a couple of days then remove the crayons

Vegetable Finger Paint
Materials
Fresh carrots
Water
Powdered sugar
Glass or ceramic bowl
Instructions
Shred fresh carrots and then add them to a glass or ceramic bowl. Pour boiling water over the carrots until the carrots are covered and cover the bowl with a plate. Allow the carrots to steep in the water for about 10 minutes. Mash the carrots with a fork and strain the juice into a shallow container. Add 6 tbsps. of powdered sugar to the carrots and stir until thoroughly combined Allow to cool.

Recipe for Slime
Materials
2 cups white glue
2 cups Water
Food coloring
1 tsp. Borax
Instructions
Combine glue, 1 1/2 cups of the water and food coloring in bowl. In a separate bowl, dissolve the borax in 1/2 cup of water and then add it to the glue mixture to form a thick clump of Slime. Knead the slime for about 10 minutes until it is the texture you desire.
