Nearly 25 percent of children ages 2 through 5 are classified as obese or overweight so it’s important that childcare centers taking measures keep kids healing and moving. You can read the facts in The Institute of Medicine’s Early Childhood Obesity Prevention. A daycare owner asks: “ What games do you play with your kids to get them active? I need any and all ideas you have! “ We asked the fans of OwnADaycare on Facebook who are daycare owners for some of their best ideas to keep kids active during the day. Here are their best ideas:
I made up a little song for the Toddlers at my Child Care Centre (The Imagination Play Station) – We call it “Hands-Up – Hands-Down” It can be sung to almost any tune … it goes ” Hands-Up – Hands-Down – touch the ground – stand up – turn around – point to the East – point to the West – Point to the friend that you like the best” we vary the last line sometimes by asking the Todd’s to point to the toy they like best – or the Teacher – or to their favorite color etc. I’m sure you get the idea Try: “Teddy Bear – Teddy Bear”
Here is one: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, reach up high
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, wink one eye,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, slap your knees,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, sit down please.
We love yoga, dance parties and musical chairs. Red light green light and any races are big too. Also I’ve been making obstacle courses which. They really like for stuck in the house days. I have 2 to 3s too. I forgot about doggy doggy where’s your bone?
We do lots of things. Outside they play chase all the time, balls, slides, jumping off of tree stumps, riding toys, etc. Inside dancing, yoga, hide and seek (2 yos love this game even though they hide in the same place every time), we have a few games like Simon Sez…one is monkey see monkey do…the song is “Monkey see monkey do. The monkey does the same as you. Oh, when you jump, jump, jump up high, the monkey will jump up high with you.’ continue with any movement you can think of. I have a monkey puppet that adds fun but you don’t have to have a puppet.
I have a small little tikes castle in middle of the room… it becomes lots of things besides just a slide… kids love music time with scarves or without… anything from Barney to Elvis…our place is a HOME so we discourage running and jumping unless it is a planned activity.. that is often hard We also have a large bouncy house that we can blow up in the garage once the outside is out of the question. We take lots of walks, they have weekly dance class at a local studio..nothing better than balloons for 20 minutes or so!! Geez no wonder I am tired at the end of the day!
