Spring Songs and Finger Plays for Preschoolers

by Carla on April 13, 2012

Celebrate spring in your in-home family daycare or daycare center through fun songs and finger plays with a spring theme. Consider teaching the following spring songs and finger plays in your child care center. They are great activities for circle time in your daycare:

Spring Finger Plays for Preschoolers

“Umbrellas” Finger Play [1]
(Use fingers, make umbrella puppets, of felt umbrellas for a felt story)
Five umbrellas stood by the back door,
The red one went outside, then there were four.
Four umbrellas pretty as can be,
The blue one went outside, then there were three.
Three umbrellas with nothing to do,
The green one went outside, then there was one.
Just one umbrella alone in the hall,
The purple one went outside, and that was all!

“A Little Sun” [1]
A little sun (hold arms above head)
A little rain (wiggle fingers in the air in a downward motion)
Now pull up all the weeds (pretend to pull weeds)
Our flowers grow, all in a row (hold up all ten fingers lined up like flowers)
From tiny little seeds. (hold thumb and finger to show size of seeds)

“Planting Seeds” [4]
First you take the seed and you plant it in the ground (pretend to plant seeds in hand)
Next a rain cloud comes and waters all around (Use one hand to simulate rain)
Next the sun shines brightly, without a sound (use fingers like sun)
And in just a few days, a flower is found (open hand like flower)

Spring Songs for Preschoolers
“Lady Monarch” [2]
Sung to the tune of: “Yankee Doodle”
Lady Monarch made a hat
of flowers, leaves and spring things,
Went to town to show it off
But she forgot her earrings.
Lady Monarch cried and wept,
She was very sad,
Then two bees sat on her ears,
So she was very glad
.

Springtime Song [3]
(Tune: Did you ever see a Lassie?)
My eyes can see it springtime, it’s springtime, its springtime.
My eyes can see it springtime, the grass is so green!
The green grass, the flowers, the sunshine and showers.
My eyes can see it’s springtime, and I am so glad.

My ears can hear its springtime, its spring time, its springtime.
My ears can hears its springtime, the birds sweetly sing.
The birds sing, the lambs bleat the frogs croak, the bees buzz.
My ears can hear it’s springtime, and I am so glad!

My body can feel its springtime, it’s springtime, it’s springtime.
My body can feel it’s springtime, the air is so warm.
The warm air, the breezes, no frost and no freezes.
(Variation: The warm air, the breezes, the pollen, the sneezes)
My body can feel it’s springtime, and I am so glad

“Spring Is Here” [4]
(Sung To: Are You Sleeping)
I see robins,
I see bird’s nests,
Butterflies too,
flowers too.
Everything is growing,
The wind is gently blowing.
Spring is here, spring is here.

“Flowers Growing Song” by Jean Warren [5]
Tune: “The Mulberry Bush”
Have your children lay on the floor and curl up into balls.
Have them pretend they are tiny seeds buried in the ground.

This is the way we sprout our roots,
Sprout our roots, sprout our roots.
This is the way we sprout our roots,
When spring time is here.

This is the way we pop through the dirt,
Pop through the dirt, pop through the dirt.
This is the way we pop through the dirt
When spring time is here.
