Cognitive Development in Preschoolers
Cognitive development focuses on developing functions of the brain such as thinking, learning, awareness, judgment, and processing information. According to developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, children go through several stages of cognitive development and learning activities for toddlers and children should correspond to the appropriate developmental.

This color sorting activity is a cognitive activity for preschoolers that helps them learn and practice the skills of classification, counting and sharing. This lesson plan includes preparation instructions, procedures, and materials list for this activity. The lesson plan also includes age-appropriate learning objectives and examples of the simple supporting verbal cues necessary to encourage participation and support learning in child care centers.

Activity Materials
For each child you will need:
3 different colors of construction paper in different shades and textures
Glue

Activity Preparation
Cover the activity table in butcher paper.
Lay out construction paper and glue sticks for each child

Activity Procedure

1. Invite the children over to the activity table. Explain to them that they will be sorting colors and making collages.
2. Encourage the children to rip the construction paper. Mix them up into a pile
3. Set out construction paper of the same colors in front of each child.
4. Write on each paper the color name.
5. Encourage the children to matching the ripped paper to correct sheet of construction paper (i.e. Blue scraps with blue construction paper).
6. Show each child how to use the glue stick to glue on the scraps and make a collage of each color.

Learning Objectives
Objective 1: To develop an understanding of classification by encourage children to sort scraps of paper by color
Verbal Cue A: Can you sort the pieces of paper into piles by color?
Verbal Cue B: Let’s put all of the red pieces of paper here and all of the green pieces of paper here.

Objective 2: To introduce the number concept of 1-10
Verbal Cue A: Let’s count the number of colors we have here.
Verbal Cue B: How many collages did we make?

Objective 3: To promote the sharing of art materials to foster social interaction and cooperation
Verbal Cue A: “Let’s take turns using the glue.”
Verbal Cue B: “Can you let Jamie use the glue stick?”

With this color sorting activity, children will learn important cognitive skills such as sorting and classification, spend time becoming familiar with the colors and textures, and have great fun.

What is Cognitive Development?

Cognitive development is the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, as it develops from childhood adulthood. According to developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, children go through several stages of cognitive development so it is critical that learning activities for toddlers and children correspond to the appropriate developmental.

The Sensorimotor Stage spans from birth through the age of 2. In this stage, children learn through sensation and movement. The Pre-Operational stage occurs from ages of 2-7. At this point they are learning to use symbols such as language to represent objects, and beginning to understand the concept of conservation. It is also the phase in which memory and imagination develops.

This shamrock sorting lesson plan includes preparation instructions, procedures, and materials list for this activity. There are also age appropriate learning objectives and a sample of the simple supporting verbal cues necessary to encourage participation and support learning.

List of Materials

Green cardstock

Shamrock template in 3 sizes (optional)

Scissors

Three containers for sorting

Tape

Shamrock Sorting Preparation

Cut out shamrocks in 3 different sizes from green cardstock. Optionally, use shamrock templates. In the circle time area, scatter the shamrocks randomly. Arrange and prepare three containers by taping of the three shamrocks to the front of each container.

Shamrock Sorting Procedures

Invite the children over to play area. Explain to them that they will be sorting shamrocks. Point out that there are shamrocks in three different sizes. Encourage the children to sort the shamrocks into one of three containers based on the picture on the front of the

Objective 1: To develop an understanding of classification by encouraging children to sort objects by size.

Verbal Cue A: Which shamrocks are small?

Verbal Cue B: Let’s put the large shamrocks in this container.

Objective 2: To teach about relationships using the terms small, big, and bigger

Verbal cue A: Let’s collect all of the small shamrocks and place them in this container.

Verbal Cue B: Which shamrock is bigger: This one or this one?

Objective 3: To introduce the number concept of 1-10

Verbal Cue A: Let’s count the number of large shamrocks.

Verbal Cue B: How many medium shamrocks are in the box?

Through play children are learning important cognitive skills such as sorting and classification. For more daycare lesson plans, see our library of daycare activities.

Toddlers and children of preschool age love activities that include water, animals, and the opportunity to get messy. Fish sorting is a fun and activity that can be used in daycare centers and preschools to support cognitive development.

Cognitive development focuses on developing functions of the brain such as thinking, learning, awareness, judgment, and processing information. Cognitive development centers around how children learn and process information. It is the development of brain in functions such as language, thinking, mental imagery, reasoning, problem solving, and memory development.

Developmental psychologist Jean Piaget contends that children go through several stages of cognitive development. From birth through the age of 2, children are in the Sensory-Motor Stage. In this stage, children learn through sensation and movement. From ages of 2-7, children are in the Pre-Operational Stage. At this point they are learning to use symbols (language) to represent objects, and beginning to understand the concept of conservation. It is also the phase in which memory and imagination are developed. Learning activities for toddlers and children should correspond to the appropriate developmental.

To help foster cognitive development, implement this fish sorting lesson plan. Make use of the age-appropriate learning objectives and some of the supporting verbal cues necessary to encourage participation and support learning.

List of materials:

Plastic fish in various sizes

One large plastic container or bucket or sensory table

Water, sand, seashells, and green Easter grass

Two plastic containers for sorting

Small fishnets

Preparation:

In a large container or sensory table, add water, sand, seashells, and green Easter grass to create a body of water. Place large and small plastic fish in the water. Place fishnets nearby so that the children can scoop out the fish with them. Place two containers nearby for sorting.

Procedure:

Invite the children over to the large container or sensory table. Explain to them that they will be collecting (fishing for) fish. Encourage the children to collect big and small fish with the net. Once they are caught, encourage the children to sort the fish into two containers; one for big fish and one for small fish.

Objective 1: To develop an understanding of classification by encourage children to sort fish by size

Verbal Cue A: Can you sort the fish into big and small?

Verbal Cue B: Let’s put the big fish in one container and the small fish in another one.

Objective 2: To teach about relationships using the terms small, big, and bigger

Verbal cue A: Let’s collect all of the small fish and place them in this container.

Verbal Cue B: Which fish is bigger?

Objective 3: To introduce the number concept of 1-10

Verbal Cue A: Let’s count the number of small fish.

Verbal Cue B: Let’s count the number of large fish.

Kids will have great fun in your childcare center while learning important cognitive skills: sorting and classification.
