Enjoy this simple preschool lesson plan that will help you teach children about the color blue. The activities below will introduce children to the color blue through an art activity, a literacy activity, a cooking activity, a music and movement activity, a sensory activity, a circle time activity and books. For each activity you will find the materials, instructions and discussion starters (verbal cues). This lesson plan works well in conjunction with kindergarten readiness lesson plans in your daycare center .
Blue Whale Watercolor Art
Materials: Light colored construction paper (grey works best), whale pattern, watercolors
Discussion Starters: We are going to paint a paper whale. Where do we find whales? Some whales are blue. What other colors are whales? Would you like to paint your whale blue?
Instructions: Cut out whales from construction paper using a whale pattern. Encourage the children to paint their whale blue. Allow the paint to dry completely. Post the blue whales on bulletin board.

What’s Blue?
Materials: Poster board, butcher paper, or construction paper, markers, crayons, pencils
Discussion Starters: Tell me all of the things you can think of that are blue?
Instructions: At the beginning of the week, lay out a very large poster board or butcher paper. Encourage each child to think of things that are blue. Encourage the children draw the blue objects they have named. Beneath each object write the name of object. Display the poster board. At the end of the week, repeat this activity. Compare to see how many more new things the children learned.
Cooking and Snack
Blueberry Pops
Allow children to add one pint blueberries, ¼ cup sugar, and 1cup nonfat milk to a blender. Puree until smooth. Next add one cup of vanilla nonfat yogurt. Blend and then pour into Popsicle molds. Insert Popsicle sticks and freeze for 3 hours or until set.

Discussion Starters: This sounds like the song Frere Jacques
Instructions: Teach the children the song “Blue” to the tune of Frere Jacques.

Sensory Activity
Deep Blue Ocean Sensory Table
Materials: Sensory table or tub, water, sand, seashells, shovels, buckets, strainers, plastic ocean animals.
Discussion Starters: What color is the ocean? What other blue things do we find in the ocean? How does the sand feel between your fingers?
Instructions: Put sand and water in the sensory table or a large plastic tub. Add seashells and plastic ocean animals. Let the children take turns digging for seashells and sea animals and feeling the texture of the sand.
Circle Time
All about Blue /What’s Blue
Send a note home with the children before the unit begins with information about the weekly schedule. Wear blue and invite children to wear blue for the day. Encourage children to list things that are blue and write them in blue on a white board or on poster board. Create a collage of blue items using pictures cut from magazines. Discuss and display the collage. Post the list in the classroom. Begin the “What’s Blue” Documentation Project: Lay out a very large poster board or butcher paper.
