Enjoy this simple preschool lesson plan that will help you teach children about the color yellow. The activities below will introduce children to the color blue through an art activity, a literacy activity, a cooking activity, a music and movement activity, a circle time activity and books. For each activity you will find the materials, instructions and discussion starters (verbal cues). This lesson plan works well in conjunction with kindergarten readiness lesson plans in your daycare center .
Art Activity
Sunshine Craft
Materials: Paper plates, yellow paint, paint brushes, yellow construction paper, stapler, glue, scissors, crayons
Discussion Starters: We are going to make a colorful yellow sun. What color is the sun? How does sunshine feel on our skin?
Instructions: Trace each child’s hand 7 times on yellow construction paper and cut them out. Instruct the children to paint the entire paper plate with yellow paint. Allow to dry. Next, staple the handprints onto the paper plates to create the sunrays. Glue googly eyes onto the sun. Encourage children to draw a nose and mouth beneath the eyes.
Writing/Literacy Activity
My Favorite Yellow Thing
Materials: Construction paper, black marker, crayons, colored pencils, paint
Discussion Starters: What things can you think of that are yellow? What is your favorite yellow thing? Can you draw a picture of something yellow? Tell me all about it. What does it look like? What does it do?
Instructions: Encourage children to draw, paint, or color a picture of something yellow on the top half of a piece of construction paper. Next encourage the children to describe their yellow item. Write the description on the bottom half of the construction paper.
Math and Manipulation Activity
Yellow Duck Sorting
Materials: Yellow construction paper, one large duck templates, one small duck template, containers for sorting
Teacher Talk: Which ducks are small? Which ducks are large? Can you put the large ducks in this container?
Instructions: Cut both large and small ducks out of yellow construction paper using templates or draw them freehand. Ask the children to sort ducks into large and small, placing the small ducks in one container and large ducks in another. Next, ask the children to count the total number of small ducks and the total number of large ducks. Determine which number is larger
Music and Movement Activity
Lots of Yellow
Discussion Starters: This song sounds like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”
Instructions: Teach the children “Lots of Yellow” to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.

Circle Time
All about Yellow
Send a note home with the children before the unit begins with information about the weekly schedule. Wear yellow and invite children to wear yellow for the day. Encourage children to list things that are yellow and write them in yellow on a white board or on poster board. Post the list in the classroom. Create a collage of yellow items using pictures cut from magazines. Discuss and display the collage.
