Establishing a daycare center- what are the things to consider
Planning any business requires a tenacity and concentration that can easily exhaust an entrepreneur. How much more attention would it take for someone who is building a business for the strictest and most demanding of clients – children.
- The initial output is a plan covering all aspects of your day care center. This would include costs, writing up a business plan, coming up with your business name, determining all necessary legal documentation, and if you are planning for it to be home-based, the extensive requirements for your house.
- The next step would be getting your home ready for the business. You will need to look into the home requirements mentioned above. You have to make sure that your house is very safe for small children who have not trouble getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. Also, you are going to have to make sure that all the pets you have at home are safe for the children to be around it. A very excitable dog would most probably be out of the question.
- You will also need to refurbish your home and redecorate it to be more attractive to your younger audience. You’ll need to designate places of individual rest, learning lessons, group activities, and outdoor activities too.
- Another very important part of operating a daycare center is the rules and regulations you set up. You will need to declare policies on payments, rates, and fees, and other specialty fees. You’ll also need to have policies on pick up and drop off, meals, toilet training, and illnesses (such as allergies) and vaccines. You’ll also need to decide on how best to handle holidays and family vacations
- Make sure that you consider religions and cultures in your programs
- Because you are dealing with children, you will need a pediatrician and a child development expert. You’ll need to ask expert advice on dealing with problem children and special children. You will need assistance and advice on your curriculum, games, motor skills (fine and gross), and other discipline policies.
- There are other things that you’ll need to take into account especially when planning day-to-day interactions. You’ll be dealing with the menu, picky eaters, learning activities and games, naps, and overly dependent parents who leave their children far too long.
- In dealing with business finances and goings-on, you will require an accounting system, record keeping, payment schedules, insurance needs, and a really dependable and trustworthy staff who all went through rigorous background checks and investigations.
- There are various agencies that you would have to talk to such as your state’s business regulatory agency. Expect a long period of inspection especially in your first year of operation.
- You can also choose to accept state programs for low income families that get assistance in paying for fees. They are a steady source of income.
- You will need an extensive insurance and a very broad medical policy since you are dealing with children.
